/// Speaking in a loud voice, - "HE" - gave a short speech, which was greeted with enthusiastic applause. ///

/// He was addressing a meeting in the community centre of Page Hall, a shabby grid of terrace streets in Sheffield, and giving voice to what many in the audience had long thought - but dared not say. ///

/// ‘We want to claim our streets back.///

A speech from the BNP or the EDL perhaps?

No instead of the word "HE" I purposely left out the following description of the speaker, which was as follows:

/// a bearded man in traditional Pakistani garb ///

Could he possibly be classed as a racist?

ANOTHEOLDGIT, when you wrote, "[sending home the Roma immigrants] is obviously the wish of those Pakistanis" is that in your imagination or is that also baiting?
I think the man in your link is a total hypocrite. I have a close friend from a traveller community, and my sister does regular business with one near us. They're not "all the same" any more than Muslims are. The man who gave this speech should be ashamed - how many times has his own community come under stupid attacks like this?

Well that was fun, and once again true to form, the usual suspects came up trumps, exactly the very response I expected when I posted the question.

Must save this one for when some EDL member or even a member of the indigenous population makes some similar comments on claiming our country or even our streets back.

How differently would you interpret what that Pakistani chap said?

/// ‘We want to claim our streets back.///

Where did he expect them to go if they were removed from his streets?

God, aren't you clever.

Let's all write some posts about how clever AOG is.

Thanks for that, at last a truthful and well thought out answer.
ANOTHEOLDGIT, which of the folk mentioned or quoted in the article said the Roma should be sent back?

That was in reply to your 14.48 post, then you had to spoil yourself with your later childish playground personal remarks

Stop wasting my time and read the article yourself, that will tell you who said "We want to claim our streets back".

Then interpret it how you like, then come back with your interpretation of what he meant.

" Where did he expect them to go if they were removed from his streets?" he may have meant he would like them to live somewhere else in the UK OR by saying he wants their streets back, he is wanting the anti-social behaviour to end NOT that he wants them to leave.
Claiming the streets back means getting them back in order, wanting the anti-social behaviour dealt with, more police policing the area...
exactly ummm - a bit like the way the town centre here is being claimed back for decent townspeople of any background, by clearing away the drunks and druggies from our public squares.

///At the moment, we don't know the demographics of the Roma community - so why would anyone refer to their work in any particular field?///

//Gypsies who flood into Britain from Romania and Bulgaria will not do so exclusively for the benefits on offer. Rather, they will mainly occupy themselves by begging and taking part in the black market.//

Hope that answers your question re 'fields', Sp.

Is taking "claim our streets back" to mean "deport them to where they came from" your wish, AOG ? I take it to mean no more than get troublemakers under control and out of the areas where they congregate, just has happened with streets in other towns in Britain.

However, it must be gratifying to have one of those Muslims; and we know how awful they all are, don't we; on your side, whatever he meant.
So how many Roma are you suggesting work in the NHS aog?

Or is your comparison bogus?
Not sure AOG was saying that, zeuhl. Rather he was saying that we would immediately say that all immigration was valuable and the NHS wouldn't work without it, so why has nobody said the Roma will be good like that. Well, you never know. There are Roma who have been here for years; Radio 5 found one who'd been here 10 years; and they have been causing no trouble, and working. Not all Roma are coming here from new EU countries, after all.
