I want to find an Instant Messenger program that will work over a LAN without needing to talk to a central internet based server.

could use net send from a command prompt

I could but my users couldnt and you would need to know the ip address or machine name. I really need something with an address book type of thing

I did a search on download.com and found a few programs that might be useful, just take your pick (the ones I've linked to are freeware):
