I currently have a iPhone 3GS and I can now get my upgrade - was wondering whether to get a iPhone 4 (which seems to be pretty much exactly the same as my current 3GS except it has a better battery life, better camera and better screen) or go for an Android device (Samsung Galaxy S, Xperis X10 or HTC Desire).

Predominant uses:
Phone calls, 5 email accounts, Skype, RSS Reader, Facebook, CoPilot, SportyPal / miAdidas

I do love my gadgets - am wondering whether to try out an Android or stick with Apple

Obviously nobody but you can make the choice, but personally I'd go 'droid.

Have you used both and any particular reason?
I wonder why they call them mobile phones these days, when I first had a mobile phone all you could do was call and text
we use Iphones at work and I dislike them because Apple restrict so much stuff on them and although you can jailbreak them to open up the restricted features you then get problems trying to get anything from the app store, also the problems with the Iphone4 have been more than well documented (and I've seen 3 myself that have needed to be returned within a few weeks)

'droid phones due to the very nature of them (based on Linux) are much more open source and give the app developers far more room to use the features on the phone without "upsetting" the manufacturers which in my opinion makes them a potentially far more powerful device.
If you already have a 3GS then you will probably have already paid for apps for this phone. These can be transferred to the iPhone 4 but not the android.
go for HTC desire
