Information On Past Relative

I was sorting through some old boxes in my loft the other day when I came across an old medal that was given to my now deceased Grandfather, the medal was inscribed on the back with the words "Presented by the River Thames watermen & lightermens almshouses benevolent fund to George Fagan for his assistance & untiring energy as President to this fund. it was dated 1949, I would very much like to get some information on this organisation and his time as the funds president but everywhere I look seems to draw a blank, can anybody help me?
