The Best Mascara ... any recommendations?

A question for you beauty experts out there, gals or guys for that matter.

I need to buy a new mascara and want one that's reasonably water or smudge proof at the very least, although I know these tend not to thicken up the lashes very much. Beauty articles usually suggest you buy mascaras with a small brush that applies small amounts at a time. But where to start looking.

Many brands seem one to go clumpy on the lashes, mainly because many seem to have overloaded brushes - so you have to wipe the residue off the brush with a tissue first before you can apply it.

Basically ... if you were given the option to be given any mascara of your choice, regardless of expense, which brand would you all choose?
Thanks very much.

Maxfactor Aqualash is the best one i've tried - waterproof and smudge proof. Maxfactor More Lashes is good for making your lashes look thicker but i found that bits of it fell off over the day and collected under my bottom lashes. If they could combine both it would be perfect.
Clinique high impact is good, but for some reason the free gifts they give out are always better than the full size version!?! I'm using Clinique Long Pretty Lashes at the moment and have to admit it does what it says on the tin!!

YSL False Eyelash Effect is the most fantastic mascara I have ever used. Smudge-proof, water-proof and even staying perfect after falling asleep drunk-proof!

Would recommend it to anyone!

Hi - after I read a post from someone recommending Benefit Bad Gal mascara I got some and its the best ever ever !! Its expensive - about 14 - but well worth it cos it makes my sparse stumpy lashes look great.
I agree that Clinique is the best. The smaller, free samples, are usually better because they are used up quicker and therefore not exposed to the air as much (which often ruins mascara after a while).
The new Max Factor one in the gold tube - it's my favourite ever!! and it's only 6.99 at the moment in Superdrug!!
