How far is the Paris Nord (Eurostar) station away from the main centre of paris?

It takes me about half an hour to walk from Gare du Nord to the Pompediou Centre and about 45 minutes to Notre Dame and the Seine.
It's two or three kilometres at most and pretty much a straight line, and Paris is very much a city for walking. You'll miss alot of regular day to day sights if you choose to take the Metro but if you do have time on your hands, take a stroll.
I agree with everything that henneth says. If you really must use public transport, the 38 bus from the Gare du Nord will be at the Pompidou Centre before you have had time to find a seat. You should go to the Metro ticket office first and buy a 'Paris Visite' card which can be used on the buses or the Metro, and buy a decent bus map from a good book shop.
