Formatting Probs

posting this for my brother,
he had viruses on his laptop so decided just to reformat back to original settings so he made a backup disk and formatted it , the problem is when reinstalling it so for has taken 4 hrs and says it still has another 4 hrs to go..when I did mine it took 45 mins ,makes me think there is something else wromg with his laptop ..any ideas welcome???
