If the mark is a whiteish color, they can often be removed by gentle application of ordinary toothpaste... just dampen a cloth and work the toothpaste (tube kind) into the area and remove...Good luck!

Tried it Clanad, but,it didn't work! Thanks anyway!
Pledge wood cleaner is quite good. The toothpaste trick does work but you have to rub it in against the grain and leave It for a couple of hours. Peanut butter or mayo rubbed in and left for a while then rubbed off may help. You can also get those wood pens that you can go over the stain with. Another one I have heard of is cigarette ash rubbed in then polished off. Hope something works for you Linda. Our poor old coffee table is beyond redemption !

Thanks shaneystar! Will have another go then! My husband will be pleased to hear his smoking ash will be good for something :-) Now,I'll have to work on persuading my cat not to use his paw to drink with, and then leaping onto the table!

I've had good luck with the toothpaste trick, but it does have to be the non-gel type. If that doesn't work, try placing a kitchen type towel over the mark and go over it with your colthing iron. Be sure it's not set on steam, and move it in a circular motion on the towel. Should take about 3 seconds or so... this works if the toothpaste doesn't... Good luck!
fag ash mixed to a paste with olive oil and rubbed in you might have to do it a few times
