Uk Tv Drama - Murder Mystery

Can anyone rember this prgram. It is set on a fairly new open plan style housing estate. I think one of the people is an author/writer and whilst writing upstairs in the office/bedroom they witness a murder in the house opposite. I am sure they gain access to the house opposite by befriending the murderer but can find nothing. I am sure it is something by Barbara Vine or Ruth Rendell but not sure.

I remember it - I think. Was the murderer a grey haired man and his house had a lot of wood on the front with a large window over the door showing the staircase?
I can picture the actor but can not think of his name. Not much help really.

Got it....it was Ruth Rendell. I didnt realise it was so long ago 1995. i was called the secret house of death

No it's not that one but it's certainly something similar. I'm now trying to remember the one I'm thinking of. It's annoying when you can't think of it isn't it.
