I'm trying to give someone the benefit of doubt but it's quite a long story & I'm on my phone.

What would be a valid reason for NOT keeping your existing mobile number when you allegedly own 2 businesses.

This person has come into our family via an Internet dating sites, no one knows anything about them, and they have walked away from a life some 150 miles away after a couple of short months.

They got offered a better number from their provider?

But why would they NOT port the number?
To stop persons from the past contacting them - could be someone they owe monet to, exes, stalkers?
"But why would they NOT port the number?"

Because sometimes business accounts offer better numbers - i.e. friendlier ones like 077 - 123 - 123 -123 or something. So you'd have to dump your old private number to take on the official one.

Why wouldn't they port it? I don't know, maybe you should ask them?

In what way have they "come into" your family?

"To stop persons from the past contacting them - could be someone they owe monet to, exes, stalkers?"

Famous art thief your reckon?
Hmm, I thought will someone notice the typo?? - i could of course actually have meant a Monet :-)
A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre Museum.

After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings, and made it safely to his van. However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas.

When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied:

"Monsieur, zat is ze reason I stole ze paintings. I had no Monet to buy Degas to make ze Van Gogh."

The MIL met him (she was single). He has walked out on a life after a very short time. You hear about confidence tricksters. On a couple of occasions he has made some mumbling excuse for not buying a round, problems with his card, or could have sworn there was a 20 in his pocket. And now the new number got me wondering if he can't pay his old contract & now needs a new one, based at a different address.
Just a bit concerned about what MIL could be getting into. Especially as no-one even mentioned to her children that he was moving in, he just announced that he'd rented his flat out. That was the first we knew of it.
It sounds like you need to have a chat to MIL to make sure this isn't what you think it is - or that she's willing to ensure financial boundaries are in place to avoid being fleeced.

What does this mean?:

"He has walked out on a life after a very short time."

And what's it based on? What he's said? What was the previous situation, as far as you know?

I mean that he seems to have left it all behind very quickly. It seems to me, to be a very flighty thing to do, which on its own would creep me out, but I ain't in a relationship with him!

On is Facebook it says he is the owner of xxxxx xxxxx (a business), but Ann Internet search can't find a venture of this name. Also claims to have another, entirely different business, a business local to his old home but he must have just walked away from his customers. Doesn't work when he is here.
Alarm bells ringing !!....I think you are right to have your doubts...have you checked all social networking sites or googled him ? I'd also check him out for ccj' s.....
try to take a picture of him, see if he flinches or tries to hide, good way of outing a conman
Try friending some of his friends on fb....then ask questions
also, i can check his family out for you to see if he has children etc, email me his full name and age and probable home town and i could probably nail him for you
Dotty are you really Jessica Fletcher ? Lol....
Google will open the secrets
Insert the old phone number
Do you know what kind of businesses they were meant to be or is there any clue in the business names?

Could they be businesses which could be done from anywhere?
