When I was a lot younger my dad used to hang the front door key on a piece of string inside the door, you put your hand through the letter box, pulled the key through and unlocked the door, a lot of the neighbors did it too, does anyone still dare to do this.

We didn't have a door in the shoebox we lived in!

We had a key on a bit of string when I was a kid and I knew plenty of people who left keys under doormats/pots. When you think about it now it sounds like madness, anyone could have got in but it didn't seem to be a concern 30 odd years ago.
Seems a daft idea to me ! If it was so widespread, than any burglar would know how to get into your house.

It was a very close knit community Mikey, I don't recall there being any burglaries, probably was, but as others have said, nobody really had anything worth stealing!
I believe long ago people were well mannered and had respect for people and their properties. And they also did things because it was the right thing to do, not for fame or recognition.
Yes, we used to hang the key on a string as well, never was a problem. more recently we went on holiday and didn't bother locking any doors, and now we don't even have any keys to our doors, however we do have rather large dogs, but that is no good if they are out with us.
.

No one locked their doors where I lived (Darzet - Ahhhhh)

In Plymouth - they had a lock-your-car week (1980) and it was a disaster. 50% said they never locked the car....
As the chief constable explained, no-one started to lock their cars but all the car thieves in London took a single ticket to Plymouth......
society there have always been scummy people around!
Yes we all did that as kids but usually the door was always unlocked anyway. Boy oh boy, have times changed eh?
I guess everybody must be right right when it comes to years ago. I was born in 1953 and I can't remember anything like the crime that we had today, certainly not within working class areas. We also didn't have much to steal. I wish we could go back to those days, at least for some things at least.

I hate graffiti and most certainly don't subscribe to the school that thinks it a "lifestyle activity" and that Banksie is some kind of modern Rembrandt. But its everywhere these days !
