Are you on AOL, using AIM?

Question Author
thanks ethel--wasn't sure how much info to put--no i am not on aol or using aim-- i have win xp home--use ms mesenger--gmail--no voice mail progs installed and done all the various scans for virus adware spyware etc and have built in firewall in my broadband router--can't think what else to try--no point going to restore--can't remember when it first happened
Sorry then Arthur.

I know that AOL instant messenger allows contacts to send a sound of their choice when they log on. It frightened me before I realised what it was!

I have had a quick look at MSN Messenger - there is an option to play voice clips automatically as soon as they are received.

Could that be it?
Question Author
thanks again ethel--i had thought of that but the voice clip would have to be sent by an existing contact and can only be received after i accept the message request--this has not happened--plus it is not really a message as such--more a sort of hello-oh as if to say--anybody out there--lol--by the way the accent is usa or maybe canadian and the voice female--i have no canadian contacts and 1 usa and is definitely not her--maybe some fixated woman who has seen my profile on messemger--lol--i should be so lucky
Does it happen at a particular time - does something happen - or does it seem to be competely random?

I'm fascinated!
Question Author
completely random--can think of no connection to anything i am doing at the time--or any particular time of the day--have checked task manager/processes each time but nothing unusual there either
Have thought and thought about this.

I still think it may be MSN Messenger. Check all the options in tools. I will also ask my more techie friends and see if they can help.

this came from jojo100 in my original post:

"it might be the adverts for smileys, i hav them if my mouse goes over it, starts it off, plus other adverts do it, thats all i can think of. "
and this from joko:

"it could police or taxi radio being picked up as they drive past your house "

certainly the smileys thingy i have encountered and could be that--need to keep watch on that ad and check it out

ethel--ur sooo caught up in this now--lol--i appreciate ur help and determination--it is consuming me too more out of curiosity than as an actual threat to my system--i have rechecked all messenger settings and no indication it is anything to do with that--i said originally i was not sure if it happened while using messenger and that is still true--if it is the smileys as jojo100 suggests it can not be messenger since smileys ad would not be on screen while i am on messenger and never have messenger running in the background if i am not chatting--cheers--arthur

Arthur

I'm like a dog with a bone! Dear me.
Arthur

I've been told that this happens when you have SmileyCentral and pass your mouse over certain points.

I'm almost sure you are far too sensible to have SmileyCentral but it's worth a mention.
Question Author
thank u for the compliment ethel--i do not have smiley central
Question Author
hanks to everyone--after all comments, suggestions etc here and on my earlier post i have concluded that it is either random interference and nothing to be concerned with or the smileys ad i have inadvertantly passed the mouse over triggering the voice--cheers to all--arthur
