Astra Diesel Charging Problem

i have a 1996 astra 1.7 td estate but when at low revs or idle all the lights pulse like the fan belt is slipping but i ahve checked and it seems to be tight,dont want to change the alternator if its not that,the charge light never comes on,any help greatly appreciated,thanks ken

It could be the voltage regulator is not operating properly. It maybe possible to change it as a separate item on the alternator. Connect a voltmeter to the battery to see if there is undue voltage fluctuation and correct voltage of around 14.3 volts throughout the speed range.
