i ask because i have a HP PSC 2355 printer, which ive had for 4 years. the problem is it eats up the ink very quickly, costing me a small fortune in new cartridges. Anway someone told me i should invest in a laser printer, as they work out to be more economical.

Laser printers do cost less than an inkjet on a page by page basis.

However color laser printers can be very expensive and the replacement toner for all laser printer is very expensive.

A few years ago I bought a Samsung black and white laser printer in a sale at Staples for about 35. The toner was only half full (most new printers come with half full toners).

The printer was great, and produced thousands of pages, but when the toner ran out I went to buy a new one and found it would cost about 55.

I also now have a Xerox color laser than I got in a deal for about 90, and this is also great, but not looking forward to replacing the toner as it will cost well over 100.

So if you do a lot of black and white printing, and can find a black and white laser "deal" then go for it.

Even if you can find a color laser on a deal, go for that also.

But be prepared to dig deep in your pocket for replacement toner.

(There are some companies that do cheaper replacement toner but I have never used them so no idea how good htey are)
Here for example is a Samsung B/W laser at less than 50 (this is similar to the model I had)

Ther toner on the ebuyer site is about 45.

And here is the color laser I have (although mine is the "N" model which is network ready so I can plug it in to my router)

But look how much the 4 toners cost for my color laser, about 170

thanx vhg. 1000s of prints, arent you lucky. im lucky if i get 100 prints on 1 cartridge. and every new cartrigde costs 20 quid, black and white, never used the colour, as dont need it
will look for a cheap laser deal. cash converters is poss my best bet
Just to add clarification to my appends above.

The toner in a laser printer will do far more pages than the ink in an ink jet, often into the thousand pages (hence the page by page cost being cheaper).

Lasers work more like photo copiers and so the print quality is also better than an ink jet.

So while the cost of replacement toner may seem high, you do get thousands of pages out of one toner cartridge.

most business use laser as they are faster , more profesional and as everyone says far cheaper page per page, we use KYOCERA b/w the toners are in exess of 80+ vat but lasts months on continuous use 5 days a week.We also have a colour HP which takes 4 x toners @ 100+ vat each !! as company we can afford to buy original HP toners but there are cheaper versions out there. These have only been replaced recently after 3 years use.

thanx all, looks like i need to enter the laser world, and say adios to my old fashioned hp printer
I have a HP Laserjet P.1005 costs 55.20p from Amazon.co.uk with next day delivery. Just bought my first replacement cartridge which cost 80, but at the price the printer does between 5000 and 6000 copies. Calculated at 5000 copies, this works out at 0.016 pence per sheet. The print quality is top class. Hope this information helps you to decide to go for this particular model, as I can certainly recommend it. Best Wishes. Schutz.
I agree with the other posters. I have had a laser printer for years(HP 4L bought shortly after they came out). It has always been reliable and costs much less to run than my Epson colour printer. If you find a good mono laser deal take it

hi schutzengel, but amazon are messing me about, they promised delivery within 3 days,so i bought the printer, then was told the delivery could be up to 3months!!!
As with most technology, something that is four years old will not perform as well as something that is of todays spec.

I suggest buying a new printer for a start, even a new inkjet would be more ink frugal than that, but if you think that you ink spend would be enough to warrant you paying a little more for a laser printer, then buy one!
You do get thousands of pages from a toner cartridge, however when it does come to replacing the toner, the cartridges can cost upto £100 each, if you have a colour laser printer that could be very costly to replace all colours.
