The dvd rom drive on my pc ( it has two optical drives -dvd rw and dvd rom ) has stopped working it 'sees' the drive as empty. The system/hardware reports the drive as ok. I changed the dvd re-writer about a month ago when it packed in rather than have the hassle of returning it to the shop, - now the dvd rom drive is kaput ! It does not get much use as I only burn an occasional dvd. I can't believe that now it is giving more probs as it's not even a year old ( HP Pavilion 770 ). Is there a way to check if the dvd drive is ok other than simply putting in a disc or looking at the hardware settings ? I know that dvd rom drives are really cheap but I am p.....d off at this fairly expensive pc (900.00 ) giving me so much hassle. My last pc was a Compaq ( which is now HP ) and never had any bother with it. Sorry about ranting on like this but now I feel a bit better. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks in advance

Sorry for posting a question in an answer box but have you tried physically swapping the drives around to see if the fault is with the cable that attaches the drives to the board?
