why are Jacobites called Jacobites. If they followed Bonnie Prince Charles wouldn't they be called Charlites or something like that?

Doesn't it come from Jacobus - the Latin for James - which was Charles' father and of course, more directly James II his grandfather?
Question Author
hello holbeckian, that looks a very likely reason!! I often wondered, and having just watched the programme on tv about Coludden, I thought I would ask! Thanks for answering! Mata
Holbeckian is right. This is also why the era of James I is called Jacobean.
yes - the first Jacobite rebellion was in 1715, in support of the Old Pretender - James Edward, the son of King James II. It was called Jacobite as Holbeckian says, because Jacob was the Latin equivalent of James (this was James junior rather than James II). Bonnie Prince Charlie, his son, was the Young Pretender; his rebellion failed in 1745; it was also called Jacobite because it was the same basic rebel movement, though by then it seems to have had much less support.

Thanks for all the great informative answers folks, I need wonder no longer !!

For a good read check out the series of books by Patricia Veryan that features a group of friends, some of whom were Jacobites. Fun historical fiction adventure!

A little romance oriented, but incredibly well written plots.

Can't remember all the titles, but here are a few:

Time's Fool

Logic of the heart

Dedicated Villain

Cherished Enemy -Don't read this one till last!

If you search it, I'm sure you will find all titles and the proper order.
