Slate Tiles

I have a large slate tile as a grate in front of my new wood burner. Looks great but no one told me how easily slate scratches. Can anyone tell me how I can get all the scratches off?

I usually sand them out with fine grade wet 'n dry paper. Slate is very soft and easily worked.
I like finishing with oil, just as with timber.
