what does certification mean in relation to what (american clients) expect of language translators ?

Hi! My first guess would be some sort of academic accreditation, ie : a diploma in translation such as the IOL Diploma of translation, an MA in translation...I don't know if the fact you are mentioning american clients has any relevance, but then I don't know whether they have special requirements in the US. Most ( reputable )translation agencies will ask that you have one of the above qualifications ( AND an extensive professional experience ! ) before they will even consider giving you work.


Another possibility is that it is some sort of public authority seal of approval of your qualifications, particularly if you specialize in legal translation, or translate official documents such as marriage certificates, birth certificates...Hope this ( somehow ) helps !
