How do I estimate the cost of rebuilding my house?

Do you mean the house had been demolished or so badly damaged it has to be rebuilt? I would estimate it as the cost of buying a similar house it the same area.

My insurance application form asks for an estimate of rebuilding the house if it became necessary, my thinking is that this will involve complete demolition site clearance etc. as well as the actual rebuilding. Never been asked this question before.

House insurance should always cover the cost of demolition and site clearance. Imagine if you weren't covered for that and such work had to be carried out. With some properties, the cost could come to more than that for the actual rebuild!
