Even in equipment using motor driven devices (CD, Tape drives) most of the power goes to drive the loudspeaker/s, especially at higher volumes.
Yes, it will shorten the life of the battery. The battery is an energy store which is converted into sound energy (and heat energy, possibly light energy on a display etc). The greater the volume, the more energy produced and therefore the more energy transferred from the battery. However, the efficieccy of a radio isn't that good so the effect isn't great. Other energy losses remain much the same irrespective of the volume
