I want to send a mobile phone to my sister in India. I bought a pay as you mobile phone (triband) because it was cheaper than buying a sim free one few days ago.

Is it allowed to unlock few days old pay as you mobile and can it be used in India after it has been unlocked in UK?

Yes, you are legally allowed to unlock your phone. There of course if no guarantee that it will work in India. However it should as it is triband.

For info, India operates on GSM-1800 operating on either 900 MHz or 1800 MHz (your manual should tell you if the phone is compatible on this frequency / band).

Hutch, Airtel and Idea are the biggest operators over there.
If the mobile phone is still under contract, It cannot be unlocked through the network provider. But you can get it unlocked through any private unlocking service. For example, You can visit http://www.classicunlocking.com/ and get the unlock code for your mobile phone at affordable cost with easy unlocking guide. Good luck mate.
