/// The Prime Minister's inner circle is said to fear that an increase in the speed limit could alienate women voters. Polls have shown a majority of drivers would support the move, but significant numbers of women were against it. ///

So is this proof that it does not matter how some measures could be beneficial, it is all down to the fear of losing votes from some quarters?

Has anyone noticed that people are driving slower since the recession kicked in. I find I'm overtaking the majority of people at 80.
From the Guardian's report

// The groups, which include the road safety charity Brake, the Campaign for Better Transport and Greenpeace, also estimated that the higher limit would lead to 25 extra deaths and 100 serious injuries a year, as well as 2.2m more tonnes of carbon emissions.

"What Patrick (Transport Minister) has learned from Holland, however, is that the policy was not as popular as the politicians thought it would be and they promptly lost the next election." //
Any attempt to raise the max. speed limit in Britain should be resisted with every weapon available. Some people drive like complete wassocks as it is , without making it any worse.

Complete lunacy !
