its a 2002 petrol by the way!
Has it always done this since he has owned the car ?, or has it suddenly just started to do it ?. I suspect that the light switch is probably at fault, he could get another from a car salvage yard and give it a try.
Question Author
no its only recently started happening thanks..
I was thinking they were "day lights." Obviously not if this has just started happening.
Check all the plug-in relays in BOTH the fuse boxes. Mate of mine had a Vectra SRI and the same thing happened to him, except if you turned off the ignition the engine kept running!! Had to stall it to stop it. Took it to dealer, who read the fault codes and said they swapped a faulty relay.

hi just an update, the car has been stood for 3 months all was fine before this,it seems you put the ignition on the sidelights come on with the switch on "0" position, also been too see him today and the remote central locking isnt working the key just locks the drivers door if you put it in the door itself, the indicators dont work at all either,or hazard switch, although when pressing the indicators with the key out they light up green on the dash and theres a beeping noise...the back doors or boot will not open no matter what even when getting in and pulling the tabs up and so on,and the warning light/handbrake light stays on when driving,i checked all fluid levels engine oil was at minimum so topped up with the correct grade let it tick over still on...not sure where to start here all fuses are fine, car drives fine....im suspecting ecu issue...or????
Question Author
windows and aftermarket radio work fine.
Right what condition is the battery in ?, because when the battery starts to fail most GM cars start to do weird things mostly electrical.
Question Author
hi tony, the battery is a genuine vauxhall one,we drove the car today 50 miles fine...would a dodgy battery cause so many problems?...hazards,indicators,remote locking, warning light....?...never come across that before....why wont the back doors open from the inside or outside..or the boot???
But how old is your battery ?.
Question Author
ive just nipped up with a good battery fitted it no change...

Question Author
what is the canbus?...could it be a breakdown in communication ive heard of something like this before?...can it be fixed?
Right, the canbus or Databus is seriously complicated it allows various ECM's and sensors to communicate with each other, also the wires in this type of system are usually the micro fibre type. I think that to get to the bottom of this problem with the Vectra your going to have to get it plugged into a TEC2 diagnostic computer.
Question Author
yes i agree tony,i will get it booked in for a look..£35 ive been quoted, what kind of results should i be expecting back....fault codes and so on?
I honestly don't know anthony, could be one or more of many things. Let us know what the diagnostic computer says when it's been read.
Question Author
yes will report back!
Thanks.
