Google says cavaliere.
As 49a is Bernstein, it would have to be Cavalieri

I have seen CAVALIERE on Yahoo as the Italian Knighthood. Has M Mepham made a mistake and assumed Bernstien as the spelling of Leonard Bernstein? the confusion continues!
I am sure it is cavalieri
I checked the spelling of Bernstein and it's right so it hs to be cavalieri
My Italian dictionary gives cavaliere for knight.
Wikipedia says that cavalieri is an italian honour equivalent to a British knighthood.
What is the point of hypothesising about possible compiler mistakes? You have to go with what fits ie Cavalieri
Question Author
Thanks for all the comments. If such an authority as Wikipedia gives Cavalieri then I'll go with that and look forward to next week's answers!

Think it has something to do with singular nouns/adjectives ending in E and plurals in I.

Only an idea though!

Just wish this setter would learn some basic Italian - has caused problems before not knowing difference between eg cognoscente/i...

mike b is absolutely right. Mepham makes other kinds of mistakes, too, which are usually due to sloppy thinking. I usually ring up the DT to see whether ther's a mistake .I'm positive the answer is cavalieri, which is a plural. I have to say, though that I don't approve of this site. It seems ther are a lot of people who know how to use a computer but haven't a clue how to use sources! If they can't hack it, they shouldn't be just told the answers. There's money at stake.
