Surely I am not the first to post? This has been delightful all the way through and I just laughed out loud at the help the Internet gave me. Great fun, thank you, Plinth.

Ruthrobin,

Thanks.
Especially teasing when the letters you are so glad to have found are not forming anything, and then you rearrange them as instructed and they still don't make sense..... was I the only one with a sense of panic until the grid phrase beacme apparent? Then the relief when you find out what is happening. Very nice; thanks Plinth.
How come my first word is hl followed by more gibberish?
It's only gibberish in English.
Sorted the revelation but the phrase eludes.Any pointers please?
Philoctetes, the phrase is most definitely symmetrically disposed.

The textual fragment spelled out by the misprints is to be found in Chambers, complete with a source.
On hols in South of France so a bit behind the pace - may be here longer than planned if ATC strike causes more chaos. Easy entry into grid fill, including unnumbered clues, but more fun/angst awaits it would appear, judging by posts.
Fair degree of sympathy with the_heisman regarding the subscription issue. Reference to "improving" the service, though, is a bit like mortgage rate changes. Letters about such changes refer to the rates in only one of two ways: they either "go down" or they "change".
Agreed. A delightful puzzle. The best, by a long head, for at least a week or two. And who would have thought that the subject of a contested will would ever make it into a Listener puzzle? Incidentally, the "rare comparative" may be in Chambers Word Wizard, but has anyone found any instance of its use? It isn't to be found, for example, in citations in the OED. And Scorpius is right about that across light, but then the preamble doesn't specify that all the final lights are real words. However, as the man said, satis quid sufficit.
That's right, Staurologist, enough money will always suffice!
It should, of course, be satis quod sufficit, but I guess he thought that the loot is always better than chokey.
Finished. Good standard, and learned something.
