I am moving into a new houeshare at the weekend and want to make my room super nice. However, the carpet is filthy in places. Whilst I am very clean and tidy I haven't a clue how to get rid of these nasty marks without spending too much money (if any).

Any ideas?

You could try using a steam cleaner? If the dirt is just usual household stains, this should do the trick. Good luck with the move
Try carpet power rug cleaner, from supermarkets but do read the instructions. If you have enough budget, rent a rug doctor carpet cleaner
Short of getting a professional in I'd pester friends & family or friends families to borrow a Vax machine! I got one for my houseproud mum and she was shocked at the filth that came out of her carpet! "that's not my dirt, I hoover 3 times a week"......fool!!
Our local focus hires out a 'rug doctor', i'm sure its under a tenner for 1/2 a day and you should be able to do a house in 1-2hrs.
