Safe To Fill In A Pond With Garden Waste?

Hi

cant find the answer anywhere. Recently chopped down a few branches and looking to fill my pond in.

My ideas was to order a ton of sand and fill it in this way. However to save time chopping up all the branches and trips to the tip - is it safe to put the branches, etc into the bottom of the pond and then pour the sand on top of it all?

Or is it running the risk of the branches decomposing and the hole part collapsing?

Any recommendations / advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks

What a shame that you want to fill it in. Did you have frogs and toads in it? If so, what happens when they come home to breed?
Don't think it will collapse, but when the branches rot down you will get a low spot forming where the pond was.
We didnt want to fill ours in with branches etc in that way.
We ended up ordering loads of stones and sand.
We had 3 gorgeous frogs popping their heads up in our new ornamental pond y/day. Whooppee.
In the days before waste recycling centres existed, many people got rid of rubbish by burying it in the garden. hence when you get an older property, digging over the garden reveals exciting stuff like old broken up fireplaces, belfast sinks and all sorts of junk.
Another way to deal with your branches is to bundle them in a far corner and let them be a comfy home for stag beetles and other little friends.
Why don't you use your pond for planting? Fill with topsoil instead of sand.

I am going for a smaller pond in another area - this one was just too big and deep and was becoming a chore to maintain, etc.

We had the same problem as you FieryP125.
Pond far too big for us and we gave our fish to fish farm last year, and wanted something much smaller.
We invested in a ornamental pond and its so much nicer now and easier to manage. We love it and so do the frogs x

Thats exactly as what I am after. So does anyone see the problem with putting my old branches in there and topping up with sand?
