They are woodland plants so need acid, moist soil and dapled shade. They will not tolerate chalk or being dried out.
I leave mine in the shade at the back of a shed until they are just beginning to flower then drag the pot into the sunshine to enjoy the gorgeous purple flowers. Always pot in Ericaecous compost and I hardly ever prune, its about 4 feet high now after about 15 years, the pot restricts the height.
