I think he was the best rock drummer ever. I know others could play faster, but he had such a unique style and sound. What does anyone else think?

I think it is pointless saying who is the best: what criteria do you used to measure the best? My guess would be that he was your favourite rock drummer. FWIW, I thought he was a great drummer and sorely missed.

Cozy was an excellent musician, but even he would not lay claim to being the 'best' rock drummer.

Having interviewed thirty-plus drummers from name bands over the last couple of years, I can tell you that the general concensus is that John Bonham was the best rock drummer - and that opinion comes from the vast majority, who obviously know what they are talking about.

Keith Moon really done it for me. Maybe I'm harking back to the old 'are dead musicians remembered as better than they actually were' thing. I don't think I am though.

Cozy was a quality drummer (I saw him do 633 Squadron live a couple of times). His drumming in Stargazer by Rainbow is brillant, that solo at the beginning is breath taking, half way through the song he hits a cow bell, almost to fill a space in the song.

My favourite drummer is Neil Peart of Rush, who is in a league of his own. Bonham, Moon, Paice (often over looked), Pourtney, Van Halen all good, but not as good.

Thanks for your comments guys. I know I made a sweeping statement and that these things are subjective, but it's always good to throw a question like this up in the air and see what happens. All the best, Matt. (PS I know what you mean, Starman. Neil Peart's drumming on Tom Sawyer or YYZ- breathtaking!)
..cozy was 1 of a kind and such a kind and decent bloke, he had a holiday home near where I live, I was introduced to him at the age of 17 when unfortunatly I had not yet discovered or appreciated decent rock music...
