Can I 'paint' my new fence more or less immediately or, as someone told me, should I leave it for a while? Many thanks.

If it already has preservative on it then I would leave it a while and let the wood season a bit.
Paint it straight away before any more rain soaks into it. The only reason I'd wait is if it is already wet when I would leave it 'til we have a few dry days in a row before painting.
What kind of paint are you intending to use?
Don't paint if the wood is wet, wait until it's dry.
