Who are the UK's largest employers?

Hi, I'm just beginning a job hunt and am trying to find a list of the UK's largest employers, possibly the 100 largest employers. Once I have this information I plan to send my cv and a covering letter to each organisation. Does anyone have any idea where I can find this information? Ive tried google but cannot seem to find the right thing.

Don't know if that's a good idea at all, as any CV - or anything else come to that - is likely to be lost in their systems. More to the point, the largest employers are diverse in what they do (take for example National Health and Royal Mail for 2) and they are not going to waste time trying to find if any of their vacancies are suitable for you - I mean, to them you are no-one special.
Anyway, size isn't everything - just being big doesn't make them best or the best chance.
You'd be better off deciding what your skills are and the sort of places you could use them, and targeting just the ones that matter.

Excellent advice Postdog. To send out 100 cv's is going to take a lot of time and effort, and your covering letter will be the same to all of them...a tough job in itself as your covering letter is vital. I always look for applicants who have taken the time to tailor any application to our company as that shows originality and flair.
If you let us know what field your expertise is in, and what area of the country you want to work in, may be oneof us can point you in the right direction and try and save you some legwork.

A fellow West Midlander. I would start my search by getting hold of the Birmingham Mail and Express & Star on a Thursday (jobs day), plus the Birmingham Post (ithink Friday is jobs day). Begin with companies who actually have vacancies, rather than touting yourself on - spec.
That way you can judge whether your experience actually matches what employers are looking for. Get your cv assessed by a recruitment agency , you should be able to go on-line and find one that specialises in graduate placements. Any agency worth their salt will give you some guidance if your cv doesn't present you in the best light.
Monster.co.uk is worth looking at too.
This is just my opinion about the way forward. Take care to tailor any covering letter to highlight why you want that particular job and what you feel you could offer.
