Do vicious assaults like this happen more often than we think they do, or is this now a relatively rare occurrence?

More regularly than you would know from the national press. Depressingly regular if you know which online news sites to go to. Gay Star News being one and Pink News being the other.
A mugging with a clear anti-homosexual element, but it's not clear which predominated in the thoughts of the attackers, the theft or the gay-bashing. My guess is the latter, given the nature of the violence, though these two gay men on a night out, walking alone, would be a good target for violent thieves; they are likely to be prosperous individuals carrying a good sum of money.

I suspect that there were far more attacks, without any other motive, in the past. Many victims, given the attitudes of the time, would not report such attacks. Happily, times, and the law, have changed and society at large is far more understanding of homosexuality. That we now have anti-discrimination laws, civil partnerships, the prospect of gay marriages, and hoomosexuals who are open about their sexuality, all show that.
Yes, i think that I agree with Fred.........one now gets beaten up for a variety of reasons, e.g being black, protesting against noise or rowdiness, being well dresses, well spoken, but mainly nowadays...for just being THERE.
It should be noted that this couple were robbed as well as beaten, so it's difficult to define what the real motive was. I suspect that if the attackers were aware that this was a gay couple they may have assumed they were an easy target for robbery. However, with six thugs giving chase, I would guess that their pickings from the robbery were just a bonus to them.

I agree with sqad. Gay or not, simply being there seems to be reason enough at times.
'Stay down faggot' was a bit of a clue no?
Sqad, I would just like to say that I wasn't looking at your bird.
Fred.......;-)

The difference is, you're much more likely to be physically attacked if you're gay, than if you're straight or well spoken or black or protesting against noise.

According to a survey published in the Huffington Post, 26% of those responding had been "attacked or threatened with violence" because of their sexuality in the past five years.

That was a survey of 93,000 people.

I don't think there are stats for an equivalent cross section of other demographics, but any how you cut it, 26% is a depressingly high number.
By the way - the poll was European-wide. There are no stats to show where the respondents came from.
sp...I am not familiar with the "Huffington Post" but i do agree, based on those facts and your comments.............it is a depressingly high number.

So are the other 74%..........in my opinion.

Lost me.
as a matter of interest, and this is a despicable attack, does it say the ethnicity of the thugs.

more of the same, until the police come down like a ton of bricks on those who do it.
