Well, not strictly door surround, the part at the bottom that you step over.

How do you replace this? as i am redecorating a house and the wood has seen better days, rotten!

Do i have to take the whole surround off? hope not!

Help would be greatly appreciated : )

You should be able to remove the threshhold bit on its own, this part is usually made of a more durable wood like teak, if its a quality one, because of the tough treatment it gets.

I recomend replacing it with a teak one and use teak oil on it every so often and also check you have a good stormboard on the door above it..

I think you might be a little optimistic "logman" if the threshold or sill is made of hardwood and has rotted the chances are that the softwood stiles have also started to rot, of course the only way to find out is to remove the old sill. This is not so easy as the stiles are tennoned into it, it may also be joggled into the brickwork. You could try pushing a screwdriver into the lower parts of the stiles if it goes into the wood easily then you will probably have to replace the whole frame,if not then you will have to cut the tenons and remove the brick at each end of the sill to allow the sill to be pulled out, you may also have to chisel out the cement bed from underneath the sill as well.In my experience it is easier to replace the whole frame anyway but you will then have to rehang the door. Replace frame and rehang door a days work for a good joiner.
