There si a piece of music called "Sailing By" that is broadcast at 00.45 every norning on Radio 4 shipping forecast. I think that it in memory of a by gone newsreader who had a connection with seafarers. Anybody know any more details?

I don't know about any connection to bygone newsreaders, but Sailing By is by the English composer Ronald Binge (1910-1979). Apparently, the version the Beeb uses is not available commercially, but there are several other recordings readily available.
