Broken Laptop Now Fixed...but How?!

Some months back my sons laptop stopped working properly (the screen was crazed each time booted up so was unusable).
Yesterday I just thought I'd boot it up out of curiosity and the same problem was still there. Connected it to the mains and no change but unclipped the battery and plugged into the mains and...it worked!
The issue was clearly the battery but why would this craze the screen?
