any ideas or easy to use software tools to split large files mostly video

VirtualDub is pretty good for a lot of video files (and dead easy to use as well as free). Audacity (ditto) is good for audio. Check http://www.videohelp.com/ for lots of info on editing audio/video (and more).

if you just want to split the file to fit it onto several smaller discs or something, or to email to a friend, you can just zip the file using something like 7-zip, and choose to make it into several 1mb files, or whatever you choose.
