Distilled Water

Is there a cheaper but equally effective alernative to distilled water (£3+ for 5ltrs) for use in a steam iron ?

yes.. tap water. How much does your Iron cost? If it's anything like mine it costs about £20. I replace it very 2 years...Much cheaper than buying distilled water

We always use tap water. I know you're supposed to use distilled water but we've never had a problem

Melt the ice build-up in your freezer/fridge if there is any.

It depends on what areas you live in. We have fairly soft water in Manchester and it tends to create scale fairly quickly. If you're living in a hard water area you should be able to use tap water without any problems.

chrisgel. It's the other way round. Hard water contains all the minerals. Soft water, like rainwater, contains a lot less.

Use tap water, no problem, just replace the iron if it becomes problematic.

Yes it's definitely the other way round. We have soft water and have never had a kettle furring up or trouble with a washing machine. As for using anything but tap water in the iron - you're having a laugh, aren't you?

I live in a very hard-water area but have a softener so I'll try that.

Ratter, No, £3 is not a lot of money but if it is an unnecessary waste it could go on something else - like an extra pint !

I was looking at the water collector in my condensing tumble dryer, it had a symbol on it saying you could use the water in an iron.

Boil a kettle of water and leave it in a jar/jug until cold.That is as good as distelled water. That is what I use,no problem...bestdriver
