I usually hate playfairs, so what a joy to have this one with a difference. Thank you so much Mordred (for a nice easy solve, too, that will be perfect to welcome newcomers). Great fun!

If it makes you feel better texas I just went and broke the EV playfair starting at the beginning by hand. It helps that I knew the end result, of course - but a good thing that I did as now I can see how the process works. So I'd argue that using the tool has helped me massively, as I've learned how to join up the sketchy start I made to the end product. sometimes it's a good thing to jump to the answer if you don't understand the method, so long as you then go back and do understand it. No-one should be expected to be able to tackle puzzles like this by hand for the first time, although I envy all those that can.

Re: last night... drat.

Re Jim Last night. Shame - you all looked punch drunk after their first blitz, and it took you too long to recover. Still, you got much further than I ever did, and can hold your heads high. Now, just concentrate on the crosswords.

Yes, and the opposition were very speedy indeed. I am sure I speak for many of us when I say that it has been great to watch King's go so far and to have 'one of ours' in the team. What a fearsome responsibility to be the only scientist in a row of classicists!
Quite - Tomlinson for Bangor was a beast on the buzzer. Can't do much about that, he had a great day. Maybe there were one or two starters more I could have got but it would just have made defeat more respectable.

I'm actually in the dark now for the rest of the competition so at least I can sit back and enjoy a match for a change! Some of the earlier matches I knew who won which made the "tension" less weird.
Completed grid and see what it is all about. Posts though do suggest a disappointingly damp squib for the final step, which we shall no doubt complete.
