Each year's growth creates a 'ring' in the trunk of a tree. Counting the rings tells you how old the tree is. Also, the weather affects how big each ring is, so the pattern of rings left by the weather in a known tree can be matched against wood from the same area even if the tree is no longer growing (e.g the beams in an old house)

Every year, as the seasons change, the climate changes the colour of the outer layer of the tree. This means that the number of rings on the tree actually records the number of climatic cycles, which is very reliable.
