A shot in the dark! does anyone know if I can buy/hire lightweight, (foldaway?) baby car seats in the UK. We are travelling to Portugal soon and have hired a car for the week but have found that to hire seats costs 12-15 euros a day but we must have one. Has anyone any ideas please? thanks.

why don't you just take yours with you?
I'm sure that a "foldaway" baby seat wouldn't be at all safe - doubt if they're made.

As I said gingejbee, I was shooting in the dark. Thanks bednobs, but how does it work? Do I take it as hand luggage or will they put in in the hold? If so does the weight count against my allowance?
Contact your airline - I'm sure they've come across this before.
Some airlines allow you to take a child car seat and put it in your child's seat. Wouldn't work if the child is under 2 and on your lap obviously but you might be able to send it checked baggage.
