In internet terms it was the big idea of some years ago - a site that would give you a starting page - or doorway - into the web with all the info you'd want to know, weather, news, shopping etc. The idea is users would make the portal their home page and go to it before going anywhere else. The idea is then you'd have millions of users to advertise to.
Yahoo fell for this and filled their search engine page with zillions of useless junk and the public went for the clean uncluttered Google.
To see aa portal go to www.yahoo.com (and see their message at the top left) and many ISPs offer a portal.
Also, www.msn.co.uk, www.freeserve.co.uk etc. All the major ISPs usually have portal pages.
