the battery light stays on when ignition key removed,

it does go out when starting, and during run.

Sounds like your alternator, battery will be flat before long !!

I agree, My Escort did this and a new altenator rectified the problem.

Or wire to alternator from switch is connected wrong, or switch could be faulty.
