bone dry and snow free. The lawn, shed roof, bird table and bin lids are still covered with snow. Why?

The solid surfaces on the ground will not be frozen to any great depth and will thefore transmit warmth upwards, if you get my drift.

The suspended surfaces you describe will not get warmth from the ground but will stay frozen by the freezing air surrounding them, including the grass on the lawn.

I see. Its odd to see the snow free and the snow covered surfaces side by side. Luckily, it applies to the roads and the footpaths.
