Hi,

I found a lovely large piece of coral over the weekend at a jumble sale and want to put it into my goldfish tank.

The piece of coral tasted very salty though!

What can I do to this piece of coral that will allow me to put it in with my fish, and is coral goldfish friendly?

Thanks in advance.....Kind regards..auditt.xx.

Coral is pure calcium carbonate. If your goldfish water is acidic, it will eventually dissolve the coral and make your water more alkaline (better for goldfish).

I would soak the coral in cold water with a half strength bleach mix for a few hours. Then i would keep soaking in cold, clean tap water for a week,,,,,changing the water twice a day,

After that, it should be fine. If the coral gets dirty and covered in algea, repeat with the bleach.

Personally, I wouldn't put bleach or detergent anywhere near my fish tank.

But if you do follow andy's advice, take heed of the

"...keep soaking in cold, clean tap water for a week...changing the water twice a day."

I am fascinated to know why you tasted the coral!
