Why the armed forces are issued with two dogtags.

One of my mates says its because one stays with the body while the other one goes to base so they can indentify the body.

My other mate reckons one goes around the neck and one around the ankle so they can match the body parts if you are blown up.

Which (If any) is right?

British forces are issued with two circular ID tags, one on a long chain, the other on a short chain. They are only allowed to be worn in combat zones. They are both worn around the neck, the small chain being looped around the long chain. In the event the wearer should die (maybe a US pilot has shot his tank up even though there's a dirty great Union Flag on top of it, or something) the long chain remains around his neck while the short chain goes around a toe.
One Stays with the body, and the other goes back to unit to be documented.

Skids, both mine are on the same chain!!!!

Thesauce, no idea i'm afraid, a guess would be the 1st one though.
