When I was a little boy my mum used to read us a poem about a man being chased by Rats. It went on and on as the man was chased across land and sea....it used to scare the bejesus out of me, which is probably why my mum read it to us!!

I have tried to find the poem but have drawn a blank....I have three children who need a good scaring so can anyone help identify the Poem.

I am sure it isn't the Pied Piper.

Perhaps my big sis (who will no doubt post in a few mins!!) can remember more

Thanks

I was going to say Pied Piper until I read your full question, was it a poem or could it have been something from Hans Anderson or Grimm's fairy tales

I don't think it was either Grimms or Hans Anderson.

I am sure it was in a collection of Poetry.

I think the man ended up on an island at the end...and he may have been in a castle or fortress on this island.

Apologies for being vague but this was about 35 years ago.

Thanks
I am here - go try and finish the Scrabble game.

I will go google the poem for you.

I'm at work and they don't let us play scrabble on Facebook.....we have to do.....work!

I've tried googling but have had no joy.

Don't you remember mum reading this poem to us? or have you blocked it out.

Perhaps some therapy is needed to unlock the memories!

....Obviously when I said we have to do work I was forgetting about the bumming about on AB that I sometimes do.
I can't remember yesterday. I got fed up looking as there are quite a few rat poems.

I am going to play Scrabble with Merlin and Frankie until you are able to make your move and beat me again.

I feel so fekkin crap and it is not time for bed yet.
Oxfam has blocked Facebook - this was a good move on their part.
Perhaps Southey's Legend of Bishop Hatto?
Even if not, it's a good gruesome read.
Have you tried googling poems about rats? There are plenty there!
Question Author
@Margie Just read the Legend of Bishop Hatto: Good poem but not the right one. On the right tracks but more of a chase at the end.

@Cupid: Yes, google has LOTS of poems about rats. Too many in fact. I thought that the well educated inhabitants of AB-land would be able to remember if from school (and probably recite it in full!!)
I know it's not the poem you wanted, but I found this for you:-

There was this rat that marched across the room
Looking for some food to consume
He found the cheese that was in the trap
One good snuggle and down came the flap
It popped him hard on top of the head
One gasp of air and suddenly he fell dead.

[By wes Williams.]
Sorry I can't help you with the rat but I am similarly plagued by trying to track down a long song/poem about Robin Hood that I learned when I was about 8 .The tune changed part way through. I'd love to know what this was.
