Due to some couples request for exotic weddings, can some guest now no longer afford to attend such weddings?

Very interesting, and, in our house, very topical.
We are getting married in the Carribean in Feb 2015.
We have 12 guests (family mostly) confirming that they would love to attend.
We are staying for 2 weeks in an All inc resort and the wedding will be on day 7. What we have said is that other than attending the small ceremony, it is THEIR holiday as well and they must do whatever they wish, at their own pace.

They all seem happy with the idea, the cost is £1300 each but we are hoping to negotiate a discount or upgrade as we have a party of 12 (hotel was optimistic something could be arranged)
I just try to treat it like a weekend away, I've never been to a wedding abroad and probably won't unless it's close friends or family. I get more cross with ridiculous stag and hens, my OH went to Vegas for one last year For Funks Sake.
Having attended three weddings last year, two of which involved long journeys and overnight hotel stays, I'm going to be far more choosy about accepting any future invitations. These three weddings, plus the gifts, cost us an arm and a leg. I wouldn't travel abroad to be a guest unless it was very, very close family or I wanted to have a holiday in that particular country.
Bah humbug.
We did consider that it may be seen as selfish.
But, we will hold a gathering on our return for all those who cant make it.
For us, it is cheaper to wed abroad and for our guests, they were planning a holiday that year anyway and would love to incorporate their holiday with our wedding destination.

Congratulations, I hope you have a lovely wedding, not sure about the honeymoon though, where will you go to get away from them all. :0)
who cares about the guests its the couples day - when I married hubby I took into consideration my mother and his mother and had a horrible day and it ruined my wedding day.

when we renewed our vows we did it our way and it was the best day ever!
You talking about cost of attending a wedding, what about the cost of having a wedding...
Im getting married in August this year and a lot of family will have to travel if they wish to join us (our wedding is near our home). I realise it costs a lot and have tried to get prices of hotels to them along with their invites and have given options for different prices along with discount codes that should come soon.
I know its pricey but i treat it as a weekend away, find things to do in area for 2nd day.
As for presents, I certainly wouldnt expect a gift from anyone, let alone those who are paying for a hotel.
Same with my hen night, there certainly wont be any long weekends away with the girls. It will be a drink in town with whoever wants to.
