Having invested so much time in watching the first four episodes, I forced myself to watch this final instalment, though my brain was screaming at me to turn this rubbish off. It was some of the worst drama I have ever been unfortunate enough to sit through. I couldn't believe this had ever been given the green light - what hold does Poliakoff have over the BBC...

i really thought it was dire, a turkey of the highest order.
I enjoyed bits of the series and was expecting a dramatic clever twist at the end. It was the weakest end to any series that I have ever seen and I was bitterly disappointed. Poliakoff can write well. I really enjoyed shooting the past from a few years back and expected much higher things than the ending that this series had. I can only assume that he has either left things open for a sequel to explain it all properly or that he started with a good idea and completely ran out of stem for an idea of how to end.

i think he ran out of ideas from the first episode, it didn't have anything to say on how the main character got to be band leader, where he lived, was brought up, all the characters were one dimensional, as to most of the dialogue it was leaden and stodgy. The music could have been a highlight, but that was pretty dire too. I don't under this because the true story of black British and American musicians who came here made a significant contribution to popular music. With the likes of Duke Ellington, an erudite and very popular band leader, this could have been a real winner, but it had no direction and no actual plot, i sincerely hope there isn't a second series. If there is i won't be watching,
Have now seen the last episode and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Question Author
confess i am surprised, in the grand scheme of things it doesn't make any sense.
Watched the first episode almost all the way through because I thought it might improve, but gave up completely towards the end. I didn't enjoy one single minute of it. Didn't bother to watch any further episodes and looking at these comments, not sorry either.
