After what happened on the pasty tax issue, do these doctors think they will stand a chance on taxing soft drinks?

And surely it will be the normal majority that end up paying for the tubby few, (Fatties no doubt buy in bulk and get a discount anyway) so how is that fair?

Some of the other points seem good me though such as fast food outlets near schools and I would certainly expect hospitals to dish up healthy grub.

sadly going on people i see around me it isn't the tubby few, but many...
Not similar. Pasties changed status depending on temperature, which was unenforceable. Fizzy drinks would either attract tax or not.

And it is said that those who drink lo cal end up taking in more calories ever the day anyway, so the goal is a dodgy one.

It's one of those 'made in good faith but doesn't stand up to scrutiny' things. But if the governement smells an income, who knows ?
if people don't want to be fat, by and large eat less, exercise more, it's quite plain and simple really, even my doctor tells me so, and i believed him
Ironically, fat people tend to drink diet drinks anyway!

It's political suicide, no government would do it. Doctors can say these things because they don't have to get re elected.

Fat people know why they are fat, it's not an easy fix, I know, but the whole of society should not be punished for those who cannot manage their weight, for what it's worth I count myself as somewhat non slim in all this.
i have never bought into this idea of diet drinks, certainly not coca cola, and other soft drinks.. mostly made up of sugar...
diet drinks do not have sugar.

How is that ?

Anecdotal, rather than scientific, but all my fat friends take diet, low calorie, versions of soft drinks. They appear not to see that this is no more than a token gesture, but doing such things as eating a pasty on their way to having lunch (which I witnessed one do) is very much of the opposite nature.
artificial sugars then, plus all the additives going.

well it's the standard rant that people have, fish, chips and pea fritter + diet coke, the fact is thouh that it does have less calories than the meal with full fat coke!
I was watching one of those 'what's in your food' type programmes. Lucozade sports drink had less calories than flavoured water. People are picking the flavoured water thinking they are the healthy option.
Flavoured water if ful of calories and suger - its really deceptive.
i think there is a lot of confusion over what are healthy foods and drinks, my motto is eat a bit less, enjoy the not so healthy things, but in moderation.
People say you are what you eat. They don't realise you are also what you drink.
Here's what 200 calories look like in certain foods:

Anyone caught out by that? This is all the coke/pepsi/whatever you need for 10% of a daily calorific allowance for the average lady: http://i.imgur.com/y2aaTgq.jpg

"And surely it will be the normal majority that end up paying for the tubby few, (Fatties no doubt buy in bulk and get a discount anyway) so how is that fair?"

It's not, if true. However you'd probably just not have the fizzy nonsense if it was too expensive as many likeminded people would - the general sales may go down and you might find yourself happy that "fatties" are paying their way.

Did you mean to post a link by the way?
"(Fatties no doubt buy in bulk and get a discount anyway) so how is that fair"

really what evidence do you base that on?
Ed, is it better to ad bacardi before or after you pour the diet pepsi?
How is that ? From studies made. For whatever reason the craving for something else must increase when the mind has been fooled by thinking it is getting something sweet and high energy, and then not receiving the expected hit. It's all more complicated than those who dismiss it as just exercising more and eating less realise. The subconscious forces some to deal with things that others never experience.
I said just the same the other day."the majority paying for the minority"
