Hi, last one (Radio Times)....

18d Note to defraud staff (5) ?r?o?

Also, can anyone recommend any crossword compilation books that are at similar level of difficulty to the RT ones? (or any free ones online)

The (used to be) broadsheet papers crosswords are a bit too hard for me.

Thanks.

C + rook = crook

The crosswords from the broadsheets are not necessarily harder - just different. When you do puzzles regularly from the same source, you get to know the way the compilers' minds work and so solve them relatively easily. Move to a different publication and everything looks hard again.

Personally I do the Daily Telegraph cryptic in bed at night with a cup of coffee and find these relatively easy. The only other one I am familiar with is the Guardian. The main difference there is their fondness for linked clues and themes. Not my cup of tea. A colleague is learning to solve cryptic crosswords using the Dundee Courier. Not challenging enough for myself, a piece of cake.
